FR: Naomi Madsen, Refugee Ministries, United Methodist Committee on Relief RE: 2008 Immigration and Refugee Ministries Grant Proposal TO: 2007 Grantees and Congregations/Organization that have requested grant information
Please find enclosed a copy of the 2008 Immigration and Refugee Ministries Grant proposal form. We ask that you read it carefully, as some information is new this year.
While the basic focus of the grant opportunity remains that projects must benefit refugees or other immigrants in the U.S. and have a link to the United Methodist Church, this year the pool of eligible applicants has been expanded to include not only nonprofit organizations with their own 501(c)(3) status, but projects of congregations in cooperation with other faith congregations or community organizations.
Please note carefully the Guidelines and Funding Criteria in the proposal form, as they outline clearly the parameters and descriptions of projects eligible for funding. As in the past, all projects must have a connection with a UMC congregation, District, or Annual Conference, and all applications must include a letter of support from the local UMC bishop.
Please note that an end-of-project report will be required of all 2008 grantees. Also, if you are a 2007 grantee and are applying for a 2008 grant, please include a one-page report on how last year’s grant was used, to what extent goals and expected outcomes outlined in your proposal were achieved, and an accounting of exactly how the funds were spent. No 2007 grantee’s proposal will be considered without such an accounting of funds previously given. If your organization received an UMCOR grant in the past, but not in 2007, please briefly explain (1/2 – 1page) when and for how much the most recent grant was received, how the grant was used, and why this funding was important to your organization.
While the maximum amount any one organization or project can receive in this grant cycle is $5,000, we encourage you not to simply default to asking for $5,000. In order to encourage ministry with refugees and immigrants across a broader spectrum, we will give special attention to well-designed smaller projects requesting less than $5,000.
The application deadline for the 2008 Immigration and Refugee Ministries Grant is August 15. Application packets must be received at our office on or before this date. Even if your proposal is sent digitally, or faxed to our office, please also send a hard copy by regular mail including all attachments and supporting documents, such as original signed letters of support.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with your questions. It’s an honor to work with people who take seriously Jesus’ call to welcome those who begin seemingly as strangers, but who become brothers and sisters, neighbors and fellow Americans.
